May 25, 1954- Was Graduation Night for the SAHS Class of 1954. My dad took his then new 16MM movie camera to the Commencement Event with the intent of recording my receiving my Diploma. Sadly, the lighting inside the auditorium was not sufficient for the technology of the day, so none of the inside scenes were usable- all too dark and underexposed. However, he did take some test shots outside of the auditorium just before the event began, and those few existing scenes show several Classmates gathering outside before entering the auditorium. This video is very short- less that a minute in length, but as far as it is known, is the only filmed record of our Graduation Night that exists. It begins with me, Tommy Gatlin at home, just before leaving for Graduation. That's my dad- Gordon Gatlin, with his lightmeter, attempting to adjust the camera. As stated above, not enough light inside the auditorium. You will likely see several people on this video that you recognize- hopefully yourself! Please keep in mind that the original source for this video is 16MM film, that was first converted to VHS tape, then digitized for publishing to this Website, so expect some image degraduation due to the image conversions.
